Working in community engagement: An evening of conversations and shared stories
Community engagement can be an odd career choice. There’s no clearly defined path into the profession. No single, dedicated degree. No universal job description. Many of us arrive here sideways – through community development, communications, stakeholder relations, planning, policy, or simply through a desire to work meaningfully with people and communities.
And once you’re in it, the work can be deeply rewarding and deeply challenging. The highs of building trust, creating understanding, and seeing genuine impact. The lows of tension, fatigue, misunderstood roles, getting described as fluffy and work that is often invisible when it’s done well.
This event offers a space for pausing, sharing stories, speaking honestly about the work, and connecting with others who “get it”. We’re bringing together people working in community engagement at all levels, as well as those in adjacent fields and anyone curious to learn more about community engagement.
The evening will begin with structured conversations that make it easy to meet people, compare experiences, and hear different perspectives. Afterward, we’ll move into an informal space for deeper conversations, reflection, and connection.
The structure of the evening is intentional. Short, facilitated conversations help take the pressure out of networking – particularly for introverts, early‑career practitioners, or anyone who has ever felt unsure about how to enter a conversation in a room full of strangers. The format creates space for listening, sharing, and genuine connection, without the need to self‑promote or perform.
Community engagement isn’t a one‑path profession – it’s shaped by the people who come to it.
