The 2026 New Zealand Symposium brought together engagement practitioners, community development specialists, and communications professionals for an inspiring and thought-provoking event in Aotearoa.
A thought-provoking opening keynote with Professor Rawinia Higgins exploring the idea of “wearing different hats” and encouraging practitioners to navigate their roles as facilitators, advocates, listeners, and decision-makers with greater awareness, adaptability, and balance.
Dr Isabella GiaVulvla rounded out day one with her wild, heartfelt, and sharply observed dive into the realities of modern engagement work – the pressure and expectations, the politics and power plays, the compassion fatigue, the tiny wins, and the stubborn hope (and humour) that keep practitioners going.
Injecting energy and a few well-placed jabs of humour to conclude our two-day event....the....brown....butterbean....Dave Letele — proving he’s just as powerful with a microphone as he is in the ring.
The programme created space for meaningful conversations across a range of topics, with participants sharing ideas, exploring challenges, and learning from one another’s experiences. It wasn’t just about gaining knowledge—it was about building understanding and expanding perspectives across the engagement community.
More than anything, the Symposium was a celebration of connection and collaboration. Networking opportunities, shared experiences, and informal conversations allowed attendees to strengthen relationships and spark new ideas to take back into their work.
A huge thank you to our incredible speakers, sponsors, and everyone who took part. Your energy and contributions made this event truly memorable. We look forward to welcoming you again at the next Symposium.
